Comedy and classic musicals fill the ABT season | Characteristics

Arizona Broadway Theater’s 2022-2023 season is a comedy mash-up of “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” and two new Broadway musicals, “Disaster!” and “Escape to Margaritaville”, to the classics, “Mame”, “Wizard of Oz” and “A Christmas Carol”.

“We are thrilled to bring a new season of musicals to life here at ABT,” said Kiel Klaphake, Executive Producer and Managing Director.

“Last week, we were fortunate enough to see many of our donors and subscribers in person as we hosted a special ‘Sneak Peek’ event for three days. Many have been loyal patrons of the theater for more than five to ten years. Some have even been there since the first show in the tent. We are beyond grateful for their current support and enthusiasm for the new season ahead.

The season opens in October with “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” which tells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy of beautiful showgirls, cows, killer bunnies, and Frenchies.

The holiday season at ABT begins Friday, November 18, with a tree lighting celebration in conjunction with the holiday production opening night.

This year, an Arizona Broadway Theater holiday tradition returns with “A Christmas Carol: The Musical.” This Broadway adaptation of Charles Dickens’ story breathes new life into the classic tale of Christmas good news and heartwarming bounty.

“Mame” kicks off the new year in January at the theater. Surrounded by eccentric characters, she celebrates the Roaring Twenties, spoils her “little love” and perseveres in life with humor and style, all without missing a dance step. Tony Award-nominated Jerry Herman’s score is full of favorite songs “Bosom Buddies”, “We Need a Little Christmas”, “Open a New Window” and “If He Walked into My Life”.

In the spring of 2023, audiences will say “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” as Arizona Broadway Theater’s production of “Escape to Margaritaville” comes to life on stage in March. This musical features Jimmy Buffett classics, including “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Margaritaville,” and “Fins.”

Based on the popular 1988 MGM film, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” takes audiences to the French Riviera for jinks and hilarity starting May 5, 2023.

‘Wizard of Oz: The Musical’ hits theaters in the summer of 2023. It’s based on the 1939 film, with songs and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and additional lyrics by Tim Rice.

ABT’s closing production, “Disaster!”, takes to the main stage in August 2023. This parody of 1970s disaster films has larger-than-life characters and lively dialogue, and features catchy songs like “Knock on Wood,” “Hooked on a Feeling,” “Sky High,” “I Am a Woman,” and “Hot Stuff.” It was created by SiriusXM Broadway host Seth Rudetsky and written by him and Jack Plotnick.

Full season passes are available for purchase by contacting the box office. Flexible season passes and individual tickets will go on sale later this year.

The theater is located at 7701 W. Paradise Lane, Peoria.
