‘Harry Potter’ special accidentally used this photo of Emma Roberts

Is there a spell that can erase a lot of people’s memories that can be removed without its caster in front of its targets? Does Obliviate work like this? If so, the creators of HBO Max Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts Reunion Special might want to use it after being caught using a photo of actor Emma Roberts instead of Hermione Granger star Emma Watson.

The photo in question is an absolutely darling throwback of Roberts sitting at the breakfast table while cradling a classic pair of Minnie Mouse ears. There is only one problem; he appeared onscreen during a segment where Watson reflected on landing the role of a lifetime (the bookish and courageous Granger, or sure enough), according to She.

Fans on Twitter quickly noted that the photo was of Roberts, not Watson. How did they put it together? Well, for starters, the photo actually appeared on Roberts’ Instagram account several years ago.

Another viewer brought up the error on TikTok in a now-viral video. At the time of publication, TikTok had over 1.1 million views and 67,000 comments. Check it out below:

If we are generous, the photo looks a little like Watson. Plus, talented stars have the same first name, which makes the mix semi-understandable. If nothing else, let it be proof that accidents do happen from time to time. Even when magic is involved …

The producers of the special made the mistake in a shredded statement with Weekly entertainment.

“Harry Potter fans well spotted,” the statement read. “You reported an error editing a mislabeled photo to our attention. New version coming soon.”

Note that they promised to rectify the mistake and swap Roberts’ photo for Watson’s. We can’t wait to see what they use.

At the time of publication, it does not appear that Roberts or Watson have commented on the confusion. If they do, they will hopefully make a joke of it.

Instead, Watson took to Instagram to post his. Harry potter return. She shared a promotional photo of the character cast from the franchise’s first film: 2001’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Her post also included a precious photo of her sleeping next to Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe.

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts premiered January 1. The long-teased special featured other notable reveals on topics ranging from Radcliffe’s crush on Helena Bonham Carter, Watson’s crush on Draco Malfoy actor Tom Felton, and why Watson nearly left the franchise.
