Multiple Comedies at Riverview Hospital | Entertainment

– Location: 2601 Lougheed Highway

Riverview Hospital is recognized as one of the most filmed locations in Canada and “the most filmed location in the Pacific Northwest” for good reason. The now defunct mental institution is well-worn, with faded red brickwork, ominous bars on its windows, and numerous sightings of suspected ghosts that definitely lend the property to the horror genre. And many horrors have have been filmed there, including “Halloween: Resurrection”, “Shutter Island”, and “Jennifer’s Body”. Riverview, however, cannot be defined by genre; it has also served as the setting for action films and several comedy stars.

It functioned as a Hong Kong prison in Jet Li’s action movie “Romeo Must Die” and a military installation where Dr. Manhattan gets his powers in Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen.” Two of its most famous uses can be traced to the legendary action-comedy series “Deadpool”, as the first and second installments of the series used the location. “Deadpool” uses the hospital as a laboratory where Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is tortured into becoming the titular mutant; “Deadpool 2” features two different buildings in Riverview like the Essex House for Mutant Rehabilitation, where young mutant Russell (Julian Dennison) lives.
