Sri Lanka Ax Cricket Kusal Perera as Limited Captain; Dasun Shanaka set to be named new skipper ahead of India series

The musical chairs game for captain in Sri Lankan cricket is scheduled for the next round, as according to the latest reports the board will drop Kusal Perera as limited skipper with all-rounder Dasun Shanaka ready to take on the role. in white – ball formats before the next series against India.

Dynamic opener Kusal Perera was given the captain role just a few months ago. He captained the team in three series – starting in May in a three-game series in Bangladesh, which Sri Lanka lost by a 2-1 margin; they were then whitewashed 3-0 in the T20I series in England, and 2-0, with a draw, in the ODI against Eoin Morgan’s team.

This move, however, is not surprising given that the board has elected and sacked numerous captains in recent years as Sri Lanka cricket continues to hit new lows; Moreover, head coach Pramodya Wickramasingha, ahead of the Bangladesh tour, had hinted that Kusal Perera’s tenure as captain was temporary in the first place.

Dasun Shanaka, in fact, has experience leading the national team – he led a young team to a T20I series victory for the Pakistanis in 2019.

Sri Lanka is hosting a second-tier Indian team, led by Shikhar Dhawan, for 3 ODIs from July 13, followed by 3 T20Is. The announcement of the appointment of Dasun Shanaka as the new captain of the limited team is expected to be made soon.

He took the left-hander’s captain position as one of the bright spots of a rather dismal tour, praising the opener for holding the team through tough times, on and off the pitch – the players had a problem with the board regarding their contracts. Arthur was also impressed with the leaders in the games against England.

“The positive points that I would take away, I thought that Kusal Janith [Perera] Led the team very, very well through some really tough times and I thought our quick bowling attack was pretty good which was great.

“We know we have the spinners, but seeing some of our rapids go by was really, really exciting,” Mickey Arthur told talkSPORT’s Follow On podcast.
