The best romantic comedies of 2022

This is going to be a great year for cute dating, grand romantic gestures, and running to the airport…I can feel it! The romantic comedy is back in a major way – and I’m talking about the comedy too much. It’s not just about sexual tension and falling in love…I want weird, silly obstacles with low stakes and tricky situations! No disrespect to Hallmark and Lifetime’s Christmas efforts, but there are some real big-screen rom-coms coming in 2022 starring your favorite stars and hilarious storylines that tumble to a big happy ending.

When it comes to romantic comedies, I don’t want to hear anything about multiverses or murder mysteries. They have their time. It’s Valen’s time.

Release date: February 11th

I may or may not have convinced myself that this Jennifer Lopez/Owen Wilson rom-com is going to save the world. The fake relationship trope is *chef’s kiss* and I can already tell that their chemistry is off the charts. (Since they’re both professional rom-commers, that’s better!) If you haven’t seen the trailers, it’s about a pop star who marries a man in the audience during her concert after catching her famous fiancé cheating on her.

It’s a follow-up to the 2019 movie, because if there’s one thing Netflix loves, it’s a romantic comedy sequel.

Lopez is in of them rom-coms this year, actually. shotgun wedding is about a destination wedding that goes awry when the wedding party is kidnapped. So… a romantic comedy AND some hijinks? Yes please.

Release date: September 30

Billy Eichner’s highly anticipated film, which he wrote and stars in, is breaking many records. This is the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio. and the first film from a major studio to feature an all-LGBTQ cast in heterosexual roles. This second stat might seem random, but we see the opposite so often (straight actors playing weird characters) that it’s pretty cool! You should also get excited about the rom-com itself, not just its ~*significance*~, because Eichner is hilarious and BROS is directed by Nicholas Stoller, who made Forget Sarah Marshall and The five-year commitment.

The lost city

This film was formerly called The lost city of D (take it)…change it, cowards! It marks the return of Sandra Bullock to the genre, alongside Channing Tatum, and it’s about a novelist who finds herself on an island with an eccentric billionaire who wants her to find the treasure she talked about in her last *fictional* novel. Brad Pitt is also in the game, for your information.

ticket to paradise

Release date: 21st of October

Oh, wasn’t Lopez and Bullock’s return enough for you? What about Julia Roberts and George Clooney? It’s true, they’ve cooked up a little romantic comedy for us too, and I’m excited. It’s kind of the opposite parent trap meets Blockers. It’s about two divorced parents trying to stop their daughter from impulsively marrying the way they did. Do we think the parents will end up together? I can not wait to see…
