Inspired by the memories of Stephanie Land, Housemaid is the heartbreaking story of Alex (Margaret Qualley), desperately trying to provide for her daughter while escaping her abusive boyfriend, Sean (Nick Robinson).
At the same time, Alex has to take care of his mentally ill mother, Paula, and sometimes rely on her, played by Qualley’s real mother, Andie MacDowell. Alex’s journey through minimum wage jobs and government assistance is a constant and overwhelming battle. As soon as she takes a step forward, the dysfunctional people in her life are there to make her take two steps back.
Housemaid is the perfect spectacle for the current economic state of our country. A lot of people can relate to Alex’s struggles with living on minimum wage. Additionally, the series features the current drug addiction pandemic in the United States. Another subject, which we do not talk about enough, is that of the paralyzing effects that psychological violence can have on an individual.
Housemaid has been a huge hit with critics and audiences alike and everyone is eager to see if there will be a season two.
How season 1 ended
After Alex’s heart-wrenching odyssey through abuse, homelessness, and custody battles, there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel in the series finale. Alex has taken his daughter, Maddy, to a new home in Montana, where she plans to continue her college education. At the same time, there are still details of his past life that have yet to be resolved.
Her abusive boyfriend, Sean, gave Alex full custody of their daughter when he realized that his alcoholism made him unable to function as a caregiver. But how long will it last? Sean is constantly going back and forth about his position with Alex and Maddy. His behavior is extremely erratic and who can say that he may not find himself on Alex’s doorstep asking for custody?
At the same time, Alex’s mother, Paula, is another loose end. At the last minute, Paula decided not to join Alex in Montana. Paula is still very ill and will likely end up homeless again after the inevitable end of her new relationship.
Housemaid Was a huge success
Housekeeper was definitely a series worthy of a frenzy. After each episode, fans were eager to hear about the rest of Alex’s journey. It’s refreshing to see character-driven dramas with female lead roles so successful in recent days.
Housekeeper had around 67 million viewers, neck and neck with Netflix’s other big hit, The Queen’s Gambit. Much of the popularity was certainly due to rising star Margaret Qualley playing opposite her real mother Andie MacDowell. Qualley has landed Housemaid after his role as a thief in Quentin Tarantino’s film Once upon a time in hollywood.
Nick Robinson, another talented young actor, also attracts viewers. Robinson consistently proves himself as an actor by taking risky roles and owning them completely. Another popular aspect of Housekeeper is the fact that it will resonate with many people. The rat trap of minimum wage jobs, domestic violence, and government aid is something many Americans can relate to. Housemaid was a story that needed to be told and now was a great time to tell it.
What the cast is doing now
This is just the start for Margaret Qualley, who has some exciting plans to come. Qualley to star alongside Christopher Abbott in upcoming thriller Sanctuary, directed by Zachary Wigon and written by Reunion co-creator Micah Bloomberg. Qualley plays a dominatrix, and the film takes place over the course of a night in a hotel room as his client, Hal (Abbot), attempts to end their relationship, resulting in drama and mayhem.
Nick Robinson absolutely killed him in Hollywood, taking on daring roles including Hulu A teacherwhere he plays a high school student being groomed by his English teacher (Kate Mara), giving us an honest view of the abuse of power. Currently, Robinson hasn’t planned anything, but we’re all anxious to see what role the talented young actor takes on next.
Andie MacDowell may be giving her best performance yet as the mother of Alex, Paula, a weed-smoker gypsy with undiagnosed bipolar disorder. In Housemaid, MacDowell steals every scene she’s in. MacDowell is set to star in Sofia Alvarez, screenwriter of To all the boys I’ve loved before, upcoming romantic drama, Along the ride.
TO Housemaid Have you been renewed for season 2?
And now the question everyone has been waiting for. TO Housemaid been renewed for a second season?
Unfortunately, Netflix has yet to announce its intention to continue the series. Having said that, just because Housekeeper was a limited series doesn’t mean the story won’t continue. It is not uncommon for limited series to be renewed if they attract viewers like Housemaid certainly did.
The story came to a satisfying and uplifting conclusion, but there are plenty of loose ends that could lead to Alex’s journey continuing. The series could follow Alex as she enters college while also dealing with the people she left behind. In an interview with “Decideur”, Housekeeper creator Molly Smith Metzler has said she is absolutely ready to continue the series. Of course, that doesn’t just depend on Metzler. With each show, many people and circumstances must come together to create a second season.
Whether the series continues or not, Housekeeper was without a doubt a spectacular and important sight which should be seen by all.
