Nate, The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Nate – the only on-screen boyfriend most people can agree is a piece of shit. Except it seems leading lady Anne Hathway doesn’t quite agree.

During a recent episode of Watch what’s happening liveAnne gave her own take on the popular fan theory that Nate is the movie’s real villain.

“No, I’m sorry I didn’t,” she replied. “I think they were both very young and they understood things.”

“He behaved like a kid, but I also behaved like a kid in my twenties, and I hope I grew out of it. I think that’s what we all do.”

But it seems that the actress doesn’t find many fans who agree with her point of view. As one Twitter user aptly put it, “Miranda Priestly was NOT the villain of The devil wears Prada. Nate Cooper was. Miranda was a strong and demanding executive. Nate was a whiny guy who didn’t like the time his girlfriend was spending at a job she loved and made her feel bad about quitting. He was the bad guy.

Tom, 500 Days of Summer (2009)

Summer told Tom early on what she was looking for – but he still got mad when he couldn’t get her to change her mind. Tom is the real poster child of falling in love with someone’s *idea*, instead of actually falling *in love* with someone.

Mark, Really Love (2003)

Most of this film’s romance leads need some serious help – but Mark is particularly a walking red flag. He’s an awful best friend overall and super creepy towards Juliette, enough said.

Austin, A Cinderella Story (2004)

This bad rom-com boyfriend is hard to spot, especially thanks to the absent-minded beauty of Chad Michael Murray. But, are we really going to believe that he didn’t recognize Sam at the masquerade ball? He also emotionally tricked Shelby into messaging Sam and then not standing up for her at the pep rally!

Paolo, The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003)

Look, we too would probably make the same mistakes Lizzy made in Rome with a famous Italian singer. But, his autotune speaks for itself, not only is he an awful singer, but he’s a conniving, two-faced rude man. At least we were lucky enough to have “What Dreams Are Made Of”.

The last chance on our list actually goes to a prominent female lead from the beloved rom-com, while you were sleeping. We’re the first to admit we’ve re-watched this movie time and time again for the incredible chemistry between Lucy and Jack as well as the 90s fashion that Sandra Bullock delivers. But let’s not forget that she lied about being engaged to the hot guy in the coma! And then fell in love with his brother!
